Dr. Marek received a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from Ohio State University in 1984. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from University of Cincinnati in 1988. Following his MD degree he competed a 5 year general surgery training at University of Colorado and a 2 year vascular surgery fellowship at University of Arizona.

During his career Dr. Marek has been involved with multiple NIH and multicenter research trials in vascular surgery primarily in areas of Acute Venous Thrombosis, Endoluminal Repair of Aortic Aneurysms, and Cartoid Revascularization. Dr. Marek has coauthored 37 peer reviewed articles, written 14 book chapters, and made 78 presentations at regional, national and international meetings. Dr. Marek still maintains an active clinical practice with primary interests in lower extremity ischemia especially related to diabetes, and hemodialysis access care.

Dr. Marek has received 2 prior Annual Excellence in Resident Education Awards by the UNM Surgical Chief Resident. He is a prior president of the Rocky Mountain Vascular Surgical Society.
Dr. Marek spent a 1 year sabbatical at the University of Florence in Italy working on new endovascular procedures for aneurysmal disease.
Dr. Marek currently serves as the interim Chair of Surgery for the University of New Mexico Department of Surgery
